Localrent vs booking direct
Localrent is a marketplace, not a rental company: you prepay 15–20% online, then sign the contract and pay the rest to a local supplier at pick-up.↗ Booking direct means one company handles the quote, the contract and any problem. Choose the marketplace for choice and price comparison; choose direct when you want to know exactly who you rent from before you pay anything.
The two compared on published terms
| Term | Localrent (marketplace) | Direct operators we track (13) |
|---|---|---|
| Who you contract with | The local supplier, named in the voucher after booking↗ | The operator you chose, named before you book |
| Payment before pick-up | 15–20% by card↗ | 8 of 13 publish no prepayment; others take 20% to the full price in advance |
| Deposit | Most listings none; if required, “usually” up to USD 300↗ | From none to 1,600 GEL (Citty, standard cover); see deposits compared |
| Tbilisi airport | Free on some cars, USD 10–30 on others↗ | See airport fees |
| Night arrival | USD 10–30 may apply↗ | From free to 40 GEL; often not published |
| Roads allowed | Varies; some publish rules allowing official gravel and mountain roads; see mountain 4WD | |
| Crossing borders | Not allowed↗ | Some allow Armenia, and some Azerbaijan, with a permit and fee; others prohibit it |
| Choice | 2,867 cars claimed for Georgia on its About page↗ | From 3 listed models to dozens |
Localrent's own pages disagree on some figures: its Georgia page says deposits are up to USD 100, its airport page up to USD 300, and its structured data counts 1,364 Georgia offers rather than 2,867.
When Localrent makes sense
- You want to compare many cars at once. Filters for deposit, transmission and all-wheel drive cover hundreds of local listings.
- You are staying on paved roads. Its published route rule is paved public roads only, which suits Tbilisi, Kakheti and the main highways.
- You are comfortable with a 15–20% card prepayment to a company other than the one you will rent from.
When booking direct is better
- Mountain routes. If your trip includes Kazbegi side roads, Svaneti beyond Mestia or gravel passes, check an operator whose terms cover official gravel and mountain roads, before you book.
- Night arrivals. Some direct operators state a free Tbilisi airport pick-up with no out-of-hours charge; see airport fees.
- No money up front. 8 of the 13 direct operators we track publish no prepayment at all.
Watch for marketplaces that look like local companies
Some sites with a local-sounding name are marketplaces too, and say so only in their terms. Before booking any site, search its terms page for “aggregator” or “supplier” and check who signs the contract.
Common questions
Is Localrent legit?
Localrent is a marketplace that says it has operated since 2011; its footer names Renot Software OÜ. It publishes how bookings work: a 15–20% card prepayment online, then a contract with the local supplier at pick-up. The practical risk is less the platform than the difference between suppliers, whose deposit, insurance and mileage terms vary by listing.
Can I drive to Tusheti or on gravel roads with a Localrent car?
Localrent’s Georgia pages say rental cars may only use paved public roads and list Truso, Juta, Vashlovani, Tusheti, Omalo and Shatili as not allowed. Some direct operators publish wider route rules; see mountain 4WD fleets.
Is booking direct cheaper?
Not reliably. Localrent advertises economy cars from USD 15 a day, below most direct operators’ listed prices, but its listings add airport and night fees of USD 10–30 on some cars. Compare the final total for your dates, including deposit and excess.
